Lotus flowers, an exquisite addition to your water garden

When you think of any water plant the first plant which comes to your mind is the lotus. Not only is the flower extremely good looking but it is an important plant if you have a water garden at home. No matter how shallow or how deep, your water garden can always accommodate the lotus in all its regality and majesty. What, however, you need to take care of is that there is plenty of water for the plant. It is usually recommended that there must be a minimum of three inches of water above the mud level in which you plant your lotus. It is not always necessary that you have to have a big pond because you can easily grow a lotus in any tub big enough to accommodate the flower and its accessory leaves.

One thing that you must always keep in mind that you can accommodate the flower almost anywhere. Its ideal conditions are humid and slightly wet but you can also grow them in moderate dry climates. But if you are planting them in moderate dry climates then be sure to care for them properly. If you are planting lotuses then be ready for constant tending and caring for the plant. The leaves of the plant have a tendency of getting discolored or shriveled, therefore take good care and look after the plant constantly.

The lotus is available in a large variety. There is one called the “Chinese Double Rose” which is exactly the deep red colour of a rose and as the name denotes double flowered. The height that this lotus reaches is usually around that of three feet and so if you are considering planting this then just a three gallon container would be enough to go ahead with. When the flower will be in full bloom it will surely surprise you with the ambience that it can create on its own. However, there are many more lotuses available and we would look at them in the following paragraphs.

Next in line is one lotus flower which is simply amazing because of the absolute rush of colours that it can produce every changing day. This is the “Mrs. Perry D Slocum”. Initially they will grow as big pink blossoms but as a day or two passes they will turn into a mix of pink and yellow. Now when the third day comes the colour has change yet again to a flushed pink and in the end turns into a yellowish one with a pinkish tinge. This lotus flower is a great addition to your garden because with its changing colours it will make magic in your little pond.

My personal favorite amongst most lotuses is the “Frankly Scarlet lotus”. Not only is it a very good coloured lotus but it has one very good quality: it produces multiple blooms from a single stalk and therefore you need only to plant one or two to show a tubful of blooms. This is one lotus though which requires extra caring and you need to maintain humidity, water intake and light requirement to make it grow perfectly. Usually they reach six to seven feet in perfect conditions and therefore arrange for the containers likewise. One thing stands perfectly true for this flower and that is; if you treat her well she will treat you back equally well.

The alba strait or the empress lots is another variety of lotus which is highly impressive as well as majestic. Coming in a whitish bloom with slight pink streaks around the edges of the petals, this flower makes for a perfect attachment to your garden pond or water garden anytime of the year. Growing upto a height of five feet, their perfect rose shaped wide blooms will just be breathtaking. Not only will it increase the beauty of your garden but will also enhance any space you keep the cut flower in.
